Description

The Role of a Mechanical Systems Specialist involves contributing to the success of the Starship program. Key responsibilities include interpreting blueprints, assembling and fabricating support equipment, rigging large components, maintaining optimal component conditions, translating metrology data, and solving unpredictable field problems.

* Interpretation of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) in blueprint analysis
* Creative fabrication of shelves, machine structures, and other support equipment
* Rigging and lifting techniques using overhead cranes, gantries, and mobile cranes
* Maintenance of components during assembly and disassembly
* Translation of inspection reports into machined surface specifications
* Field problem-solving through spur-of-the-moment modifications


  • Beyond technical expertise, this role requires adaptability, dependability, and craftsmanship. The ability to work safely, think critically, and find solutions to complex problems is crucial.

    To excel as a Mechanical Systems Specialist, you should possess strong analytical skills, the ability to visualize complex geometries, and experience working with manual tools and machinery. Familiarity with millwright operations, metrology, machining, welding technology, or tooling is highly desirable.

    In addition to technical qualifications, candidates must be willing to work overtime, weekends, and off-shift hours on a rotational or permanent basis. Physical demands include lifting 25 lbs., standing for extended periods, and working at elevated heights.

    Required Skills and Qualifications

    * High school diploma or equivalency certificate
    * 1+ year of professional experience in Toolmaking, millwright, mechanic, boilermaker, or machinist roles
    * Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
    * Ability to interpret blueprints and technical drawings
    * Experience with manual tools and machinery
    * Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
    * Excellent communication and teamwork skills

    Preferred skills and experience include:

    * Millwright operations experience
    * Metrology, machining, welding technology, or tooling experience
    * A completion of an accredited skilled trade apprenticeship program
    * Weld fabrication experience and ability to pass a welding skills test
    * Understanding of the manufacturing process from concept to completion
    * Ability to visualize complex geometries and integrate them into fabrications
    * Ability to manually inspect components using conventional inspection tools
    * Ability to apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) discretionarily
