About the Role
The Refugee Counsellor will provide assessment, counselling and advocacy support to refugees and asylum seekers, including children, young people, and families. The role focuses on supporting survivors of torture and trauma, delivering high-quality counselling for complex trauma, and helping clients manage the psychological and social impacts of human rights violations and displacement.
You will also support capacity building and sector engagement activities, provide psychoeducation, and collaborate with other service providers to ensure a holistic, culturally safe and trauma-informed approach.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver comprehensive psychosocial and risk assessments for refugees and asylum seekers
- Provide counselling and therapeutic support to survivors of torture and trauma
- Develop and implement individual case plans to promote wellbeing and resilience
- Advocate for clients across health, legal, education, and community services
- Provide secondary consultation to external agencies on trauma-informed practice
- Conduct psychoeducation sessions for individuals, families, and groups
- Respond to family violence risk in line with MARAM guidelines
- Maintain accurate client records, case notes, and program data
- Participate in program evaluation and continuous improvement
Key Selection Criteria
- Tertiary qualifications in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling or related field
- Experience working with refugee and asylum seeker communities
- Demonstrated knowledge of trauma-informed care and complex trauma support
- Strong skills in assessment, case planning, counselling and advocacy
- Experience in supporting CALD communities with settlement and wellbeing needs
- Ability to provide culturally safe, person-centred support
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with internal and external partners
- Alignment with values of individuality, growth, community, and meaningful connection
