Please note, this register is only open to ongoing Australian Public Service employees at the APS3 classification. This register may be used to fill vacancies within the Immigration Group over the next 12 months.

About our team

Immigration Group is responsible for administering Australia's Permanent and Temporary Migration Programs, people smuggling policy and implementation, and the Refugee and Humanitarian Program and Settlement Programs. The Group delivers status resolution in detention and the community, and manages the Department's client facing services and information services. It also provides policy advice on national impacts of migration, citizenship, people mobility, and delivers citizenship, social cohesion and multicultural programs.

Our ideal candidate

You must already be an APS3 in the Australian Public Service employed in an ongoing role to apply for this position. Our ideal candidate will be a team player who enjoys working in a dynamic and evolving environment. You must possess strong written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to work under pressure whilst remaining calm in stressful situations. You must be able to contribute in a team environment, displaying integrity and high ethical standards. You must possess good judgement and pay careful attention to detail to make lawful decisions confidently, while undertaking analysis and drawing accurate conclusions based on evidence. You must also work collaboratively with others to deliver efficient and accurate workplace outcomes. You must be competent with Microsoft Office Suite and have the ability to quickly learn departmental IT systems, legislation and policy.

The Department of Home Affairs has offices located all over Australia, currently in Parramatta (NSW); Melbourne (Victoria); Perth (WA); Adelaide (SA); Hobart (Tasmania); Brisbane (QLD); Belconnen or Civic in ACT; Darwin (NT).

Duties and responsibilities

You must already be an APS3 in the Australian Public Service employed in an ongoing role to apply. You will transfer at the APS3 from your current Department to the Department of Home Affairs, Immigration Group. You will typically work in one of the following roles:

- Visa and Citizenship Decision Makers – tasks include record keeping, managing mailboxes and providing responses to clients while assessing visa and citizenship applications under general supervision; review of supporting documents and information to assess applications in line with policies to make lawful decisions.
- Administrative Support Officers – data entry, responding to enquiries, drafting correspondence using templates, managing mailboxes, supporting day-to-day operations, and other general administrative duties; establish and maintain relationships with internal and external clients and stakeholders.
- Program Advice and Support Officers – contribute to program service delivery, assist with reporting and communications, develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders, respond to enquiries, provide routine advice to clients.
- Customer Support Officers, Call Centre Officers and Client Liaison Officers – provide timely and accurate advice to stakeholders via face-to-face, phone, email, correspondence, live chat or social media; guide clients to lodgement channels.

Eligibility

You must already be an APS3 in the Australian Public Service employed in an ongoing role to apply. To be eligible you must be an Australian Citizen. The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance, and: ABF Workers will be required to obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC); Home Affairs Workers will be required to obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check. In some circumstances an ESC may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check as determined by the delegate.
