Offer description

Overview

Contribute to an internationally collaborative ARC Laureate Fellowship project. Lead analysis of large ocean datasets, delivering data products and tools that support climate research platforms. Full‐time, fixed‐term position (4 years) based in Hobart, relocation assistance may be considered for the right candidate.

About the Opportunity

The Senior Ocean Data Analyst will support the ARC Laureate Fellowship project 'Precision Climate Tracking of the Earth's Response to Emission Reduction', which addresses the global challenge of monitoring the Earth's response to climate change by enabling precise tracking of energy balance and the water cycle, understanding human and natural climate influences, and developing decision‐support tools in collaboration with international partners. The role involves conducting high‐level analysis of large ocean datasets, producing value‐added data products and visualisations integrated into IMOS information resources, supporting the deployment of project tools, and contributing to research outputs and publications, with a high degree of autonomy and active engagement across all project activities.

What You'll Do

* Develop and implement new scientific tools for the slow and fast changes in the oceans as part of the earth's energy balance and water cycle.
* Develop products for precision tracking of the oceans including the attributable part due to human influence and natural variations.
* Analyse and evaluate the developed products to enable an assessment of their quality.
* Deliver annual updates of the earth's ocean temperatures, ocean salinity and other ocean variables on the IMOS portal.
* Contribute to the training of Higher Degree by Research students in data products and analysis and, where appropriate, act as a research adviser.

What We're Looking For

* A PhD or equivalent in an oceans related discipline (e.g., physical oceanography, geophysics, ocean biogeochemistry).
* A high level of skill in scientific programming and scientific research tools including tools for repeatable detailed statistical analysis and interpolation methods.
* Experience in the delivery of products through the web in collaboration with ocean data providers.
* Skilled in the use of ocean re‐analysis products and climate model data sets (like the CMIP simulations) and their analysis, particularly for the ocean component of these coupled models.
* Skilled in technical writing to support research projects and the capability to contribute to quality publications and presentations at conferences.
