Paediatric training in Tasmania offers a wealth of paediatric specialty and sub-specialty experiences, working with a large supportive and expanding team and opportunities to explore the beautiful state of Lutruwita through work-life balance.The General Paediatric Advanced Training program offers accredited positions in Hobart, as well as rural accredited locations in Launceston and Burnie. Positions are accredited for both core General Paediatrics and rural General Paediatrics with a perinatal component. The Community Paediatric and Paediatric Rehabilitation Medicine rotations are also accredited for developmental/psychosocial training. ‘Stream’ positions are available to offer trainees a guaranteed 3-year position in which they complete all advanced training requirements. Accredited sub-speciality advanced training positions are available in Community Child Health, Neonatal and Perinatal Medicine, and Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine.The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) is the major paediatric and neonatal referral service, as well as the major university teaching hospital for Tasmania. It has a 32-bed paediatric and adolescent wards, including 4 short-stay units and 4 high dependency units. It also has a 12-bed Neonatal and Paediatric ICU (NPICU) and is co-located with a 16-bed Special Care Nursery. The units are staffed 24/7 by registrars and residents, with in-house consultant coverage during working hours and on-call overnight. There is a large outpatient service. The Department of Paediatrics is managed by a team of Staff and VMO Specialists in Neonatology, Neonatal and Paediatric Emergency Transport, Paediatric Intensive Care, Paediatric Endocrinology, Neurology, Oncology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Community Paediatrics, Paediatric Surgery, Child Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, and General Paediatrics.Launceston General Hospital (LGH) includes a 34-bed General Paediatric ward with a short-stay unit, a 12-bed Level-2 neonatal nursery, and Paediatric outpatient clinics. The unit operates 24/7 staffed by registrars and HMO staff, with onsite consultant oversight during working hours and on-call overnight. It is accredited by the RACP for Advanced Training in General Paediatrics, including Perinatal, Community/Developmental Paediatrics, and rural rotations.North-west regional hospital (NWRH) in Burnie includes a 12-bed General Paediatric ward and an 8-bed neonatal intensive care unit with 2 special care nursery beds. It features an active outpatient department with excellent clinic exposure during rotations. The unit is staffed 24/7 by registrars and HMO staff, with consultant oversight.
