About The Program
As part of this program, you will rotate across the perioperative units at Maitland Hospital and Kurri Kurri Hospital, gaining exposure to a variety of specialities and developing your clinical expertise. Some participants may rotate through both sites, ensuring a rich and diverse learning experience.
You Will Learn Perioperative-specific Skills In Two Key Areas
Anaesthetic/PACU & Day Stay
- Support anaesthetists by learning and applying critical skills such as airway management, cannulation, and Advanced Life Support (ALS).
- Gain experience with patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) systems and pain management protocols.
- Manage day surgery patients from admission through to theatre transfer and post-anaesthetic care.
- Work closely with a highly skilled medical team to advance your anaesthesia and recovery nursing expertise.
Instrument/Circulating
- Prepare and set up for surgical procedures, ensuring instruments and supplies are ready and available.
- Learn how to maintain a sterile field and assist with surgical procedures.
- Contribute to smooth theatre flow by supporting surgeons and the wider operating team.
This structured program follows clinical guidelines and competencies to strengthen your perioperative practice, supported by Perioperative Nurse Educators, mentors, and supernumerary training time.

- Current registration with AHPRA.
