Job Purpose
To provide support to the UGLRL business and Principal Bridge & Structures Engineer for CRN Bridges and Structures.
Holding engineering authority for structures, including structural and civil matters, providing technical advice, technical content for scopes, investigations and assurance activities, review of designs and management of key civil and structures-related systems such as Heavy Vehicle Permits.
Key Responsibilities
Hold Engineering authority for CRN assets (EA Level 4 – CRN Structures Engineer) and support the Principal Bridge & Structures Engineer (EA Level 5).
Provide authoritative bridge and structures technical advice to Routine Maintenance, MPM, Enhancements, Third-Party, and Asset Management functions within UGLRL, to assist them in resolving the technical queries and delivering repair, refurbishment, and renewal projects.
Manage sub-consultants and/or sub-contractors to deliver the design, research, study, repair, and renewal projects related to CRN Bridges and Structures.
Investigate and inspect irregularities of the CRN structures (including bridges; culverts; tunnels; and water tanks) to assess their risks and find the mitigation measures and areas of improvements, to ensure the asset performance is maintained to deliver the KPIs determined in the contract.
Lead technical investigations into root causes of incidents where CRN bridges and structures are suspected to be at fault and provide expert input into investigations lead by other parties.
Support the Principal Bridge & Structures Engineer to provide input into the maintenance strategies and plans of UGLRL (50AMP, 10MSP, 3MWP) in areas such as overbridge, underbridge, culvert, miscellaneous structures renewals, refurbishments, and repairs.
Participate in or lead the creation of, review of and/or revision of CRN standards, manuals, specifications and technical notes.
Liaise with other key technical Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) within Asset and Engineering team including Track, Surveying, Geotechnical, Signals and Rollingstock SMEs on complex issues where there are interfaces between different disciplines.
Participate in preparing scope documents for projects related to CRN Bridges and Structures, including investigations, design and construction projects.
Lead, coach and develop junior bridge and structures Engineer within the UGLRL business.
Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and innovation in the asset management systems, processes and quality of engineering outcomes
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in civil, structural or railway engineering (or other relevant discipline). Master’s degree (or above) in civil engineering is preferred.
Minimum 6 years’ experience (Bachelor post-graduation), as the civil, bridge, and/or structural engineer, in the design or construction of civil infrastructures (such as bridges, wharves, culverts, commercial buildings) in a civil construction, maintenance, engineering consultancy and/or academic & research environments.
Extensive experience in the analysis and assessment of overbridges, underbridges, and culverts, in particular for the Heavy Vehicle applications.
Extensive experience (min. 2 years) with O&M Contracts, government organisations or equivalent railway networks.
