Role Overview
The Theatre Technician in the operating room plays a critical role in supporting the surgical team by ensuring the operating theatre is set up, maintained, and equipped to the highest standard. The technician is responsible for managing the technical aspects of surgical procedures, maintaining equipment, ensuring the theatre environment is sterile, and assisting with patient positioning and preparation as needed.
Key Responsibilities
* Prepare the operating room for surgery, including the set‑up of medical devices
* Adhere to strict infection control protocols
* Troubleshoot and resolve equipment malfunctions promptly
* Ensure all technical and safety checks are completed before use of equipment, including electrical and mechanical devices
* Provide assistance as required to surgeons, anaesthetists and nursing staff
* Ensure that the required equipment and supplies are readily available throughout the surgery
* Assist with patient positioning to ensure comfort, safety and access for the surgical team
* Follow all safety regulations to ensure a safe working environment for the team and patient
* Manage the disposal of biohazardous materials in accordance with hospital policy
* Monitor and manage supplies to ensure adequate inventory
* Assist with ordering, receiving and storage of supplies
* Report any issues with equipment or supplies to the appropriate delegations
Education & Qualifications
* Completion of a theatre technician certification (desirable)
Experience
* Prior experience in a hospital or surgical setting is highly preferred
* Experience with operating theatre equipment (desirable)
Skills
* Excellent technical and problem‑solving skills
* Strong attention to detail
* Ability to work effectively in a high‑pressure environment
* Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment
* Knowledge of infection control procedures and safety regulations
* Ability to work under pressure in a sterile and fast‑paced environment
* Ability to follow direct instruction from nursing and medical personnel
