The Data Reliability Engineering team at Xero manages our highly scalable and reliable database platform, supporting engineering teams to innovate and deliver customer value on top of this platform. This year, we are migrating from our self-managed cloud database platform to cloud-managed database offerings. The next step is to build PostgreSQL expertise within the team and modernise our critical workloads into PostgreSQL safely and at scale. We are seeking a talented Principal Software Engineer to join the Data Reliability Leadership team, helping us achieve these goals and drive innovation through tooling and best practices.

How You'll Make Impact:
* Collaborate with multiple teams to create and deliver high-quality software efficiently.
* Contribute to the long-term technical strategy for Data Reliability and the Application Data Platform.
* Assist in modernising workloads to PostgreSQL safely and lead broader modernization initiatives.
* Provide coding mentorship to senior engineers, ensuring data quality and system reliability.
* Align technical decisions with product vision and strategy, influencing architectural direction.
* Facilitate cross-functional collaboration, resolving disagreements and ensuring goal alignment.
* Help build and manage scalable software solutions, simplifying complex technical challenges.
* Utilize data-driven insights to improve customer solutions.
What You'll Do:
* Create software: Guide engineering practices, adopt new technologies, and define standards including security and data guidelines.
* Develop Golden Pathway tooling: Lead the strategy to simplify database platform development and innovation.
* Ensure quality: Promote quality standards, implement validation checks, and foster a community of practice.
* Resolve issues: Prevent systemic problems through effective practices and tooling, participate in on-call duties.
* Establish standards & frameworks: Research and implement best practices, advocate for DevOps culture, and address technical debt.
* Drive continuous improvement: Maintain and share knowledge of relevant technologies.
* Deliver infrastructure: Guide scalable, reliable infrastructure delivery, balancing automation and performance.
* Promote modern practices: Champion agile methodologies and improve delivery processes.
* Participate in recruitment: Engage in hiring, outreach, and promoting Xero's brand.

$266,000 - $315,000 a year
