A critical federal government agency, is driving a major digital transformation. We are seeking an exceptional Senior SQL Developer/Data Engineer to join this pivotal initiative.
Your mission will be to design, build, and optimize the data backbone-specifically ETL/ELT pipelines and analytical datasets-that power election systems, forecasting, and business intelligence capabilities. This role is central to modernizing our core election systems and ensuring the ongoing integrity and efficiency of electoral services.
You will be working within an Agile (SAFe) environment, leveraging the extensive capabilities of the Microsoft Azure ecosystem to deliver robust, citizen-centric technology solutions.
Responsibilities:
As a key member of the multi-disciplinary project team, you will focus on high-performance data engineering and development, including:
* Data Pipeline Mastery:
Architecting and constructing highly
scalable Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) and ELT data pipelines
using
Azure Data Factory
for cloud-scale data movement and integration.
* Advanced SQL Development:
Writing, tuning, and maintaining
complex T-SQL and stored procedures
within
SQL Server
to ensure peak database performance and efficient data workflows.
* Data Modelling Collaboration:
Partnering closely with data architects, modellers, and business stakeholders to translate complex data requirements into elegant, high-performing technical solutions.
* Data Quality & Operations:
Actively monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolving data pipeline failures and performance bottlenecks to maintain data integrity and availability.
* Agile Contribution:
Fully engaging in the
Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)
methodology and contributing to all Agile ceremonies.
* Code Excellence:
Upholding rigorous coding best practices, including version control, comprehensive code documentation, and automated testing standards.
Requirements:
You are a seasoned Data Engineer with deep expertise in developing analytical solutions using Microsoft technologies. You're a proactive self-starter who excels in a collaborative environment, possessing excellent communication skills and a strong foundational understanding of the data modelling (especially dimensional modelling) and ETL lifecycle.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate substantial capability across all the following criteria:
1. Azure Data Platform:
Proven hands-on experience in the successful deployment of enterprise-scale data solutions utilizing
Azure Data Factory
and
Azure SQL databases
.
2. SQL & Performance Tuning:
Expert proficiency in
SQL and T-SQL development
, including the ability to write, refactor, and
optimise complex stored procedures
for high-performance data operations.
3. Cross-Functional Communication:
Exceptional capacity for verbal and written communication, with a track record of effective
collaboration across technical, analytical, and business teams
.
4. Cloud Architecture:
A strong conceptual and practical grasp of
cloud-based data engineering within the Azure environment
, with a focus on implementing best practices for scalability, security, and compliance.
5. Dimensional Modelling:
Expertise in designing and developing
ETL processes for dimension and star schema models
to support various analytical and application use cases.
Highly Desirable Attributes
* Experience establishing and managing Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines using Azure DevOps for streamlined operational efficiency.
* Previous professional exposure to federal government data domains.
* A relevant tertiary qualification (e.g., Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or Engineering).
This role can be based working Hybrid in Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, or Melbourne. You must possess an active Baseline security clearance prior to starting. You must be eligible to obtain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) clearance.
This contract will be starting as soon as possible finishing at the end of 2026.
