About Our School

St Thomas More College is a Brisbane Catholic Education co-educational secondary college catering for approximately 1,030 students. The college opened in 1974 with a commitment to pastoral care. Our mission is to provide a holistic education, inspired by Jesus, that seeks, grows and serves through faith, learning and community.

Summary

Play a key role in developing and implementing improvements to gardens, grounds, playing fields and external surfaces, enhancing the school environment. The role supports the Property and Facilities Manager with planning and prioritising works programs and coordinates quality control during program works. As part of the Facilities Staff (Grounds, Maintenance and Cleaning), the Horticulturalist/Greenkeeper supports the Principal and Leadership Team in delivering services to the College community.

Responsibilities

- Maintain gardens, grounds, lawns and playing surfaces, including top dressing, seeding, turfing, coring, planting, trimming, mulching and fertilising.
- Prepare ovals for sporting events and carnivals, including layout and line marking.
- Supervise, maintain and participate in installation, operation and maintenance of pumps, irrigation equipment and drainage systems.
- Manage safe distribution and application of organic and chemical pesticides, sprays and fertilisers, including storage and record keeping.
- Operate and maintain machinery and equipment for lawns, turf and playing fields, and undertake routine maintenance.
- Supervise and train grounds staff, tradespeople and apprentices.
- Manage and maintain stores and facilities, including stock control and record keeping.
- Maintain a safe working environment for staff, students and visitors.
- Demonstrate knowledge and experience in grounds and garden maintenance and planning.
- Work under general supervision, either independently or as part of a team.
- Prioritise tasks based on workflow and time constraints.
- Adhere to safe operating procedures and safe work practices for grounds and maintenance equipment.
- Understand safety requirements for hazardous substances in the grounds environment.
- Exhibit strong interpersonal and communication skills.

About You

To be successful, you will bring relevant contemporary skills and experience, including:

- Experience in maintaining gardens, lawns and playing surfaces.
- Knowledge of operating and maintaining pumps, irrigation equipment and drainage systems.
- Ability to safely distribute and apply pesticides and fertilisers; proficiency with specialised machinery and equipment.
- Strong organisational skills for managing stores and facilities, including stock control and record keeping.
- Experience supervising and training grounds staff, tradespeople and apprentices.
- Commitment to WHS (Work Health and Safety) requirements.
- Certificate Level 3 Horticulture, Parks & Gardens.
- HR/MR Driving License with clean record and driver authorization (or willingness to obtain). Training will be provided.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications at Certificate III level, or completion of an apprenticeship would be highly regarded.
- Ability to drive both manual and automatic transmission buses.

- Eligibility to work in Australia for the period of appointment.
- Current or ability to obtain a Paid Employee Positive Notice Blue Card prior to commencement.
