Overview
Horticultural Assistant - Research & Development at Mountain Blue. Mountain Blue is a proudly family-owned and operated company, globally recognised for its leadership in blueberry breeding. The Victorian R&D site plays a vital role in the development and evaluation of high chill blueberry genetics—an integral part of Mountain Blue's innovative breeding program.
We are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented R&D Horticultural Assistant to join our passionate team at our Erica farm in Victoria. The role will support daily orchard operations as well as assist with plant breeding, trial evaluations, and data collection that directly contribute to the success of our R&D program.
Duties
Carry out daily orchard and nursery tasks including propagation, potting, pruning, weeding, watering, fertilising, mowing, and monitoring plant health.
Operate farm machinery, vehicles, irrigation, and climate control systems (only if trained and authorised).
Assist with technical R&D activities such as trials, data collection, pollination, seed collection, and maintaining accurate breeding records.
Support the setup and repair of infrastructure including irrigation, weed mat, netting and general site duties.
Apply agricultural sprays and drenches (if trained), follow hygiene protocols, and manage disposal of unwanted stock.
Work closely with supervisors and team members to ensure high-quality outcomes, professionalism, and adherence to company policies.
Maintain confidentiality, support data accuracy, and uphold integrity in all documentation and plant breeding activities.
Skills and Qualifications
Strong organisational and time management skills.
High level of skill in the Microsoft Office suite.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
High attention to detail, especially in repetitive or data-driven tasks.
Strong initiative and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Great ability to work independently and within a team.
Relevant qualification in horticulture, agriculture, or a related field is advantageous but not essential.
Remuneration
Dependent on experience and ability to meet our selection criteria.
