For over 25 years, MDT has delivered complete in-house design, manufacture, and assembly of specialised vehicles and off-road accessories for commercial fleets, domestic retail, and export markets. Our expertise spans GVM upgrades, chassis extensions, and 6x6 conversions, through to trays, modules and specialised vehicle accessories.

Position Overview

Reporting directly to the MDT Business Manager, the Design Engineer will take a senior role in shaping the design, development, and approval of MDT's innovative vehicle modifications. This is a full‐time role for a highly motivated engineer with a proven track record in automotive engineering, or similar mechanical design.

Key Responsibilities
* Lead 3D design and engineering activities for all MDT projects, ensuring designs meet functional, safety, and regulatory requirements.
* Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers and designers, fostering best practices in CAD, design standards, and documentation.
* Oversee development and management of Secondary Stage Manufacturer approved modifications, including component design, engineering analysis, prototyping, and testing.
* Take ownership of the MDT QMS, ensuring it is up to date, fit for purpose, and implemented across all business activities.
* Manage vehicle modification approvals, ROVER applications, and compliance documentation, liaising with relevant regulatory bodies and approved outlets.
* Integrate design outputs with document control, ERP systems, and manufacturing processes to optimise efficiency and traceability.
* Engage directly with clients, suppliers, and internal stakeholders to define project scope, specifications, and deliverables.
* Provide technical input for project costing, procurement, scheduling, and resource allocation.
* Identify, implement, and champion continuous improvement initiatives across design and production processes.
Key Requirements
* Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) with current professional registration (RPEng or CPEng preferred).
* Extensive experience in mechanical design within automotive, heavy vehicle, or industrial manufacturing sectors.
* Proven expertise in 3D CAD (Autodesk Inventor or equivalent) and drafting standards, with strong understanding of design for manufacture principles.
* Demonstrated experience in vehicle modification approvals, compliance, and regulatory frameworks.
* Hands‐on, proactive approach to design and engineering challenges.
* Strong leadership, mentoring, and communication skills with the ability to collaborate across all levels of the organisation.
* High level of self‐motivation, creativity, and commitment to delivering innovative, high‐quality engineering solutions.
