Primary objective
Work with industry, Aboriginal communities, stakeholders, and Government to conduct research and extension programs to
support the sustainable development of the Northern Territory aquaculture industry. Deliver research outcomes that
facilitate aquaculture enterprises in partnership with remote communities.
Context statement
The Darwin Aquaculture Centre (DAC) is located on Channel Island, 35kms from Darwin and 25kms from Palmerston. There
is no public transport beyond Palmerston, so having your own transport is essential. This position will be required to work
weekends, public holidays, and irregular hours.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Contribute to the development of research plans and strategies.
2. Plan and conduct research that delivers outcomes for the Northern Territory Aquaculture industry.
1. Seek specialist expertise where needed to capitalise on the knowledge and skills of others.
2. Manage externally funded projects to ensure they are delivered on time and within budget and independently publish
results.
5. Supervise and develop staff in all technical aspects of research.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Degree in aquaculture or related discipline.
2. Demonstrated abilities in all areas identified in key duties and responsibilities.
3. Demonstrated experience in aquaculture research with substantial practical experience producing aquaculture species.
4. Demonstrated ability to focus on achieving results through good project management practices, consulting external
expertise, making best use of the team, and quality control.
5. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and oral, and proven leadership and supervisory skills.
Desirable
1. Post graduate degree in aquaculture or related discipline.
2. Experience in the culture of tropical species, preferably oysters and microalgae.
3. Proficient in the design, manufacture, and maintenance of aquaculture systems.
4. Experience in the provision of extension services to clients from various cultural backgrounds.
