About Us
Roads ACT is responsible for the management of the ACT's territorial and municipal roads, national highways, community paths, stormwater networks, bridges, car park facilities, traffic signals, street lighting, and associated infrastructure. These assets are managed on behalf of the ACT Government for the benefit and enjoyment of the Canberra community.
The Works business unit delivers predominantly in‐house services and provides a 24/7 incident response. Our services include street sweeping, line marking and signage maintenance, roadside furniture maintenance, road grading, and small to medium road maintenance works, including asphalt and concreting.
The Role
Roads ACT is seeking reliable, safety‐focused, and motivated individuals to fill a Concrete Labourer position within the Works team.
In this role, you will primarily undertake general concreting and road maintenance activities. You may rotate across various road maintenance crews depending on operational requirements, providing opportunities to develop new skills and contribute to a diverse range of works.
The concreting team is seeking candidates with experience working in a road or construction environment, preferably with some concreting experience. The role may involve undertaking additional related duties across the broader Works team to support service delivery and build team capability.
Key Responsibilities
* Assist with the preparation, pouring, finishing, demolition, and disposal of concrete assets
* Undertake screeding and finishing of concrete works
* Support the construction and maintenance of territory assets, including roads, driveways, kerbs, gutters, and verges
* Safely operate hand and power tools
* Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with standard operating procedures, safety requirements, and quality standards

Eligibility/Other Requirements:
o Visa holders are eligible to apply for both permanent and temporary roles. Those with eligible visas may be considered for permanent employment, while individuals with temporary residency or limited-duration visas may be offered permanent employment for the duration of their visas.
o Traffic controller (TCR) essential or ability to obtain within three months of appointment.
o Implement traffic control plans (IMP) essential or ability to obtain within three months of appointment.
o CPCWHS1001 - Prepare to work safely in the construction industry essential.
o 11084NAT - Course in Asbestos Awareness - essential.
o 10830NAT - Course in Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention essential
o HLTAIDO11 Provide First Aid essential or ability to obtain within six months of appointment.
o Current driver's licence Class C essential, class MR (medium rigid) essential or obtainable within three months of appointment.
o Competent in mobile software applications and the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
o This position does require a pre-employment medical.
o This position does not require a Working with Vulnerable People Check.
o Applicants are made aware that the essential requirements to be obtained within the period prescribed above are a mandatory requirement to successfully complete the probation and to be appointed permanently to this position.
o Roads ACT will support the successful applicant through the training requirements by organising up to two sessions at the cost to Roads ACT. Should additional attempts be required to obtain the applicable license/certificate in the period prescribed, the costs to acquire these will be borne by the successful applicant.
To be eligible to progress beyond GSO5 pay increment 5.3 requires:
o Attainment of a Certificate II in Civil Construction (Road Construction and Maintenance) or other equivalent relevant certification as approved by the Senior Manager, Roads ACT.
o In the absence of Certificate II training providers, Roads ACT supports the attainment of Certificate III in Civil Construction (Road Construction and Maintenance) or other equivalent relevant certification as approved by the Senior Director, Works, Roads ACT. After successful completion of the minimum certificate II requirements, the pay increment can be increased beyond the GSO5.4 through an accelerated incremental advancement
Notes: This is a temporary position available immediately for a period of three months with the possibility of extension up to 12 months and/or permanency. A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months. Selection may be based on application and referee reports only.
