What is the role?

Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Armourer (Bands 3-4 within the Forensics Broadband) for the Australian Federal Police. The position is based in Canberra, and attracts an operational composite of 22%. Travel is required to other states and territories to conduct firearm servicing activities.

The role of the National Armoury is to provide support capabilities relating to Firearms, Firearms Accessories, Ammunition and Conducted Electrical Weapons (Tasers) to the AFP and partner agencies. As Armourer, you will be required to work within a close knit team to undertake firearm servicing, maintenance and repairs.

As a team member in the National Armoury you will be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments, particularly with CO3. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?

As an Armourer, you will be relied upon to contribute, engage, develop and enhance the performance of the National Armoury, and will be responsible for a variety of duties including, but not limited to:
Work within a team of high performing Armourers and Armoury support team members.
Servicing, altering, modifying or repairing firearms in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and specifications or any other approved AFP requirements.
Asset management and logistics to facilitate purchasing, receipt, recording, monitoring, storage and distribution of goods and services in support of operational requirements.
Carry out destructions of obsolete firearms and other controlled items.
Provide light engineering support in the form of technical advice, design and fabrication of items as required.
Conduct research and development into new firearms, firearm accessories and ammunition.
Improve business processes on behalf of the National Armoury
Essential requirements

**Has contemporary knowledge and experience relevant to**:
You must be an Australian Citizen
Trade Certified (tradesperson)
Ability to acquire relevant Armourers certification to repair and service operational platforms (this training will be provided to successful applicant/s upon commencing in the role)
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one
Desirable requirements
Trade certified in Engineering (Mechanical) Cert III or equivalent, Fitter and Machinist (highly desirable), and or Mechanic
Relevant and contemporary Armoury related knowledge and experience
Previous logístical experience
Additional information
- This role attracts a composite allowance in recognition of expanded working hours, normal patterns of attendance and shift patterns (such as afternoon shifts, weekends and Designated Public Holidays) that are required under the Operations working pattern. In accordance with the AFP Enterprise Agreement 2017- 2020, an employee who is required to work in accordance with the Operations working pattern will receive a Core Composite of 22% in addition to their Base Salary which will count as salary for superannuation.
