Hope Vale is located 370 km north of Cairns and 46 km Northwest of Cooktown on the Cape York Peninsula. Located in a valley, the Shire covers 110,000 hectares with diverse landscapes including wetlands, springs, rivers, and beaches. Hope Vale is surrounded by ranges, dunes, coloured sands, and beaches. The area is accessible via sealed roads from Cooktown, improving connectivity.
The land includes DOGIT land under the Council trusteeship, land under the Hope Vale Congress Corporation, and large freehold blocks, some subdivided for residential use.
The Hope Vale Aboriginal Shire Council comprises a mayor, four councillors, and an Executive Management Team including the CEO and senior managers in Finance, Social Services, and Operations. The annual budget is approximately $25M with around 70 staff. The Council has a strong governance record, maintaining low financial risk and good operational practices.
Services include aged care, support programs, an Indigenous Knowledge Centre, radio, youth services, child care, and kindergarten.
The Role
The Council seeks a progressive leader to drive growth and operational excellence, delivering superior community outcomes. Reporting to the CEO, you will embed within the community, develop an action-oriented approach, and manage resources effectively. Focus areas include community engagement, local employment, urban development projects, and infrastructure maintenance.
Your remit covers environmental health, animal management, parks, water, waste, and civil works.
About You
You are a manager ready to step up or a current director with experience in local government or private enterprise. You have a strong leadership record, are self-motivated, and possess a deep connection or passion for Indigenous communities and diverse backgrounds. Your skills include staff development, problem-solving, organizational planning, budgeting, stakeholder management, and change leadership. Excellent communication and relationship-building skills are essential.
