About the role: An ongoing Senior Police Lawyer position is available in the Specialist Legal Branch (SLB) of the Legal Services Department (LSD) of Victoria Police. SLB is responsible for most of Victoria Police's criminal advice work. We are a busy team offering an outstanding quality of work and a great diversity of issues. We identify and manage legal risk, and provide advice, on issues ranging from major and organised crime, terrorism, covert services, forensics, road safety and family violence to human rights, First Nations issues and prejudice-motivated crime. We work closely with other parts of Legal Services, including Civil and Litigation Branch and Courts and Prosecution Services Division, as well as other corporate services teams, such as the Legislative Policy Unit, and operational areas. The Senior Lawyer position is based in SLB's Human Rights and Public Law team but SLB staff are agile, giving you the opportunity to work across multiple functions and subject matters to support the broader team in delivering organisational priorities. Your duties will include: * Supporting delivery of a strong legal advisory service including undertaking high level legal research, critical analysis regarding complex issues of statutory interpretation and drafting legal advice * Participating in the development and delivery of training including but not limited to in respect of the Charter of Human Rights and prejudice-motivated crime * Instructing counsel n some complex cases, and considering the application of counsel's advice to operational practices and issues * Build and sustain partnerships and networks with key internal and external stakeholders to assist with meeting organisational objectives including to identify and manage legal risk and provide legal advice and support * Considering and commenting on legislative proposals and Cabinet submissions * Assisting with project work related to SLB functions and operations. As the successful applicant, you will have: * Admission to practice as an Australian legal practitioner (unrestricted practising certificate) * Experience in researching legal issues and compiling legal advice * Ability to work as part of a team, in a developing and emerging work environment * High level of resilience and emotional intelligence. * A current and valid Victorian Driver Licence. Requirements and relevant information: * One (1) x full-time, ongoing position available. * The salary range for a VPS4 role is $97,955 to $111,142. Although it is standard practice for selected candidates to commence at the base of the salary range, genuine consideration will be given to a commencement salary within the available range that is commensurate with the successful candidate's knowledge, skills and experiences. This will be subject to negotiations with the Hiring Manager in the course of the selection process and may include the provision of evidence of a higher income and/or supporting documentation (as required). * As a member of the CPSD you will be located on selection, at a specific office for a particular advertised opportunity. The primary location for this position is Level 28, Tower 1/311 Spencer Melbourne 3001. However, given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department.
