James Cook University is seeking a passionate and community-driven Senior Research Officer, Community Engagement to play a key role in delivering FNQ Connect—a transformative initiative bringing together communities, services and systems to improve outcomes in disability and rehabilitation across Far North Queensland.

This is a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of research, community voice, and real-world impact, supporting place-based change that is led by communities themselves.

Why this role matters

You will help ensure that the voices of people with lived experience are at the centre of decision-making—supporting communities to lead change, strengthen services, and build more inclusive futures.

Working across Cairns, the Atherton Tablelands and surrounding regions, you'll collaborate with Community Champions, service providers, and stakeholders to turn ideas into action and research into meaningful outcomes.

What you'll do

* Lead community engagement across the Tablelands and broader FNQ region
* Build strong, respectful partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and a wide range of stakeholders
* Support and facilitate Community Action Groups to identify and deliver local priorities
* Apply developmental evaluation approaches to continuously learn and adapt initiatives
* Translate insights into high-quality reports, presentations and publications
* Contribute to funding opportunities, advocacy and long-term sustainability of FNQ Connect
* Represent the program at forums, workshops and community events

What you'll bring

* Experience in community engagement, health, disability or community development
* Strong facilitation and relationship-building skills across diverse communities
* Demonstrated ability to work in place-based or community-led initiatives
* Cultural capability and commitment to working respectfully with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities
* Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate research into practice

What we offer

* Flexible work arrangements (0.6 to 1.0 FTE - we're open to what works for you)
* A generous superannuation scheme with up to 17% employer contributions
* 5 weeks of annual recreation leave plus leave loading
* 15 days paid sick/carers leave per year
* The opportunity to make a genuine impact in regional and remote communities
* A collaborative and purpose-driven team environment
* The chance to work on a high-profile, innovative collective impact initiative

Ready to make a difference?

Join us in shaping stronger, more connected and inclusive communities across Far North Queensland.
