Overview
The City of Lancaster is seeking a bold, visionary, and deeply authentic leader to serve as its next Chief of Police. This unique opportunity will guide the police bureau—approximately 128 sworn positions, 41 full‑time non‑sworn, 16 part‑time non‑sworn, and 8 cadets—at a pivotal moment to continue growth and evolution. The chief will partner closely with the Mayor, City Council, and administrative leadership to ensure that the bureau's goals and practices align with Lancaster's civic values, strategic priorities, and aspirations.
The chief will communicate a compelling vision, mentor subordinate leaders, and build systems that sustain excellence. This role balances internal development—coaching, culture, accountability—with external engagement—building relationships with residents and other key stakeholders, cultivating transparency, and collaborating with community partners.
Responsibilities
* Communicate a compelling vision and strategic priorities aligned with city values.
* Mentor and develop subordinate leaders across all ranks.
* Build and sustain systems that promote operational excellence.
* Balance internal culture, accountability, and coaching with external community engagement.
* Collaborate with mayor, city council, and administrative leadership on policy and resource decisions.
* Maintain effective media, community stakeholders, elected officials, and labor group relationships.
Qualifications
* At least fifteen years of progressively responsible police experience, including a minimum of ten years in supervisory roles and five years at the command level.
* Demonstrated track record of working effectively in a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
* Experience developing and implementing innovative crime‑reduction and community‑policing strategies.
* Bachelor's degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or related field required; master's degree desirable.
* Advanced training such as FBI National Executive Institute, FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute, or Police Executive Research Forum – Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) considered a plus.
* Ability to speak another language is a plus.
Compensation and Benefits
The current salary range for this at‑will position is up to $165,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The benefits package includes health, dental, vision, retirement contributions, paid leave, professional development opportunities, and other customary municipal benefits.
