Wounded Heroes Australia is seeking a dedicated Farm Hand / Groundskeeper to support our Equine Program — a vital initiative supporting veterans, first responders, and their families through horse-assisted healing. 
This role is hands-on and diverse, combining daily horse care, property and equipment maintenance, and supporting the preparation and smooth running of therapeutic and team-building programs. 
Responsibilities 
- Horse Care & Management: Ensure all horse yards and fencing are safe for both horses and handlers 
- Assist with feeding horses according to grass-to-hard-feed ratios and dietary requirements 
- Assist with paddock rotation, order and store feed and medical supplies 
- Assist with horse assessments and preparation for team-building programs 
- Property Maintenance: Ongoing repair and maintenance of fences (especially due to kangaroo damage) 
- Erect additional fencing as needed for grazing or injured horses 
- Mow grassed areas and maintain access paths 
- Implement and manage weed eradication programs (spraying and manual removal) 
- Remove natural and man-made debris from property 
- Manage fire ant baiting and control program 
- Conduct daily perimeter checks for kangaroo carcasses and report/remediate accordingly 
- Program & Equipment Support: Assist with setting up equipment for programs and team-building sessions 
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance of farm equipment 
- Schedule and monitor servicing of machinery and tools 
- General garden maintenance including weeding, planting, pruning, and upkeep of garden beds 
- Coordinate, train, and supervise volunteers assisting with horse care, gardening, and general tasks 
- Provide clear instruction and lead by example in safety, animal care, and maintenance tasks 
- Foster a positive and inclusive environment that encourages long-term volunteer engagement 
- Liaise with program staff to align volunteer support with daily needs 
- Create a sense of community and shared purpose aligned with the mission of Wounded Heroes 
Ideal Candidate Will Have 
- Previous experience in a similar role, ideally with horses 
- Basic understanding of horse nutrition, care and safe handling 
- Competence in using and maintaining farm equipment and tools 
- Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to property upkeep 
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team 
- Problem-solving mindset, especially when dealing with animal care or property issues 
- Physically fit and capable of performing manual tasks
