Who we are
Gazette is a startup media company building a network of local newsrooms across Australia. We make high-quality local journalism freely available in the formats our audiences love, and on the channels where they already spend their time.
Our aim is to help communities connect with, contribute to and navigate the big issues shaping their local areas.
We are proudly independent and non-partisan, and are funded by supporters, advertising and philanthropic backers who believe in our mission.
We are building a modern, digitally native newsroom: fast, experimental, audience-first and editorially rigorous; and we're building a genuinely supportive culture: low ego, high trust, collaborative and kind.
About the role
Gazette is hiring its first dedicated Impact Editor, a senior editorial role focused on strengthening the public-interest power of our journalism, particularly on climate, energy, misinformation and other major structural forces shaping Australian communities.
Across Australia, newsrooms face mounting pressure. Budget cuts and outlet closures have reduced local and specialist reporting, compressing the time available for thoughtful, high-quality journalism.
Meanwhile, the issues journalists are expected to cover are becoming more complex. Policy areas such as climate, energy, infrastructure and regulation are highly technical and fast-moving, and increasingly shaped and distorted by sophisticated spin from industry, interest groups and political actors.
Taken together, these pressures mean confusion often goes unchallenged, misleading claims spread and communities are left without good information about what is happening, and why it matters.
This role exists to ensure our journalism cuts through spin, challenges weak claims and helps communities understand what is happening and why.
What you will do
You will directly shape the clarity, accuracy, impact and public value of our journalism:
* Scan the horizon for emerging public-interest stories
* Guide reporters through complex subject matter and storycraft, including policy, regulation, angles, sourcing, interviews and copy
* Work across multiple mastheads and regions, supporting reporters in diverse local contexts
* Opportunity to pursue original reporting alongside editorial responsibilities
Who this role is for
You might be right for this role if you:
* Have significant experience in climate and/or energy through journalism or adjacent public-interest work
* Enjoy helping other journalists do their best work and can give precise, generous and constructive feedback
* Have a strong sense for how to illuminate complex issues with great storytelling
* Can spot when a story is really about power, incentives, governance or who controls information, even if it presents as something else
* Are excited to help shape a high-trust, high-autonomy newsroom culture that supports learning, experimentation and ambitious early-career talent
Skills and capabilities
* Editorial judgement, intellectual rigour and the ability to help others think clearly
* Strong editing and story-shaping skills across breaking news, investigations and explainers
* Ability to analyse data, modelling, legislation or technical reports and translate them into plain English
* Excellent written communication and explanatory writing
* Experience managing multiple stories and deadlines simultaneously
* Sound legal and ethical judgement, particularly around defamation, risk and public interest
* Comfort working in a fast-moving startup newsroom with evolving systems and priorities
* Willingness to be on camera
