About The Team
The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is the Australian Government's national authority on measurement. We play an important role in the Australian economy by leading, maintaining and regulating Australia's measurement system. We deliver world-class measurement products, advice, and client services, and administer the regulatory framework for measurement. Our national measurement standards are recognised internationally, and we work to enhance and maintain these standards.
We value the different skills, knowledge, and perspectives our employees bring. We're committed to giving everyone an equal opportunity to participate, contribute and progress. Our values and behaviours centre on being adaptable, innovative, accountable, strategic, inclusive, and influential.
About The Physical Metrology Branch
NMI's Physical Metrology Branch provides Australia's peak measurement standards for physical quantities. This enables measurements made in Australia to be accepted internationally ,which is particularly important for trade. Our people share their expertise by providing measurement services from calibration and testing to technical advice and training. We contribute actively to international measurement forums and enhance our capabilities through research and development in line with national and international requirements.
About The Time And Frequency Team
The NMI's Time and Frequency team are Australia's timelords. They keep time for Australia with an ensemble of atomic clocks that also contribute to the international time standard, Co-ordinated Universal Time (UTC). Time is distributed over the Internet to users in industry, commerce, government, and education by a nationwide network of time servers connected to our atomic clocks. The availability of accurate, reliable time is increasingly being recognized as critical infrastructure in the digital economy.
The Time and Frequency team offers calibration services to industry, providing a diverse and unique portfolio of measurement capabilities, including measurement of optical frequency. We have developed an in-house system that provides a remotely-located customer with a source of time and frequency on their premises that is continuously traceable to Australia's time standard. Supporting these systems is one of our major activities.
The team collaborates with universities, other national metrology institutes, and industry on research projects focused on improving its time dissemination capabilities. We also contribute our experience to international metrology through participation in numerous working groups, including the current effort towards the redefinition of the second.
The opportunity
We are excited to be offering a role for a physicist/engineer to join our team to develop better ways of keeping Australia's clocks ticking and of distributing time to Australia. You will receive hands-on training in time and frequency measurement, working alongside a team with decades of experience. You will be able to apply the full range of your scientific, technical, and practical skills to a diverse range of measurement challenges, delivering real value to Australia. In time, it is expected that you will grow into a world leading expert in one or more technical areas. The role is being offered at Science and Technical Level 6/7.
