It starts with YES!
At Optus, we have an ambitious goal to be Australia’s most loved everyday brand.
Reporting to the Senior Director, Taxation, this senior role forms part of the Optus Group Taxation team, which reports to the CFO and oversees tax strategy, compliance, and governance across the organisation. The position requires a high level of professional and technical competency in all areas of indirect taxation law, with a strong focus on GST. You will be responsible for providing expert advice, managing tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions, and ensuring robust governance to support the Group’s business strategy and risk management.
In addition to day-to-day advisory responsibilities, you will lead key GST initiatives, identifying opportunities for cashflow optimisation, process improvement, and customer-focused tax solutions. Strong stakeholder engagement across business units and corporate functions is essential, along with excellent communication skills and a commercially driven, solutions-oriented mindset.
What you'll be doing:
* Provide expert GST and indirect tax advice on major projects, transactions, and commercial arrangements, including acquisitions, divestments, and contract reviews.
* Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external advisers to ensure optimal tax outcomes and compliance throughout all stages of business initiatives.
* Support Australian indirect tax compliance activities, including preparation and review of GST returns, managing ATO reviews, and liaising with tax authorities.
* Monitor and implement changes in tax legislation and policy, engage in industry forums, and work with Legal and business units to manage regulatory impacts.
* Drive tax process improvement through data analysis and automation, enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and customer experience across indirect tax functions.
What makes you perfect for the role?
* Tertiary qualifications in accounting and/or law, with CPA or CA ANZ membership.
* Over 10 years of GST/indirect tax experience in a Big 4 or mid-tier firm, or significant in-house corporate tax experience at a managerial level.
* Deep expertise in GST law and accounting, with strong analytical and critical thinking skills, attention to detail, and advanced Excel proficiency.
* Exposure to broader indirect taxes such as stamp duty, customs duty, excise, and withholding tax is highly regarded.
* Proficiency in SAP and GST-specific technologies like Edge or CFT; experience with data tools such as Power BI and Alteryx is an advantage.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to multitask, manage competing priorities, and deliver effectively within a team environment.
