Part Time continuing 0.3 FTE role Opportunity to provide research excellence through high level animal welfare Base Salary $86,896 - $91,816 (pro rata to 0.3 FTE) 17% superannuation About the opportunity The Laboratory Animal Services team is looking for an Animal Technician to provide animal husbandry services across LAS facilities based at Camperdown and Kolling Institute (RNSH). In this role you will perform routine animal husbandry tasks including cage changing, cage checking, and general monitoring of animal health. Your key responsibilities will be to: ensure that animal records are accurate and up to date, collecting and submitting data for regulatory compliance, financial operations and human resources management of breeding colonies through tasks which may include mating’s, weaning, transfer of stock animals and issuing of information or notifications to researchers communicate concerns with animal welfare promptly and assist the Animal Facility Officers and the Animal Welfare Veterinarian in resolving any issues apply skills to a varied range of different tasks relating to animal care, including performing basic technical procedures of sample collections, injections and demonstrating techniques for researchers clean all husbandry related equipment and maintain animal facilities in a safe, clean and well-organised state monitor equipment and infrastructure to ensure reliable and safe operation; initiate repairs and maintenance in accordance with relevant approval procedures and manage the ordering and use of consumables to ensure economic operation and continuity of supply implement and monitor compliance with local policies and procedures to support compliance with regulatory requirements including those relating to work health and safety, animal welfare and gene technology provide training for new staff and researchers and supervise the work of subordinate animal care staff within the facility to ensure appropriate standards of animal care and client service where required participate in an overtime roster providing routine inspections on weekends and delivery of essential animal husbandry tasks on public holidays if required provide input into planning exercises and the revision of policies and procedures to ensure operations continue to meet the University’s strategic goals and respond appropriately to change About you a qualification in a relevant field or the equivalent in training and experience a valid Australian Driver’s License a First Aid Certificate or a willingness to obtain one experience in managing rodent breeding colonies a commitment to animal welfare and to the use of animals in research conducted in accordance with the NSW Animal Research Act and a practical understanding of the outcomes sought by relevant regulatory code animal handling and animal care skills of a high standard, especially in relation to common laboratory species and experience with SPF principles a willingness to work as part of a team and flexibility to work in any of Laboratory Animal Services’ facilities (including availability to work additional hours or to participate in a weekend roster as required).
