Born out of a protest movement over 50 years ago, the Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW/ACT) Limited (ALS) is a fearless advocacy organisation, committed to achieving social justice and equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, families and communities.

The primary objective of the ALS is to deliver high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal people in NSW and the ACT. ALS's specialist services and teams address systemic issues and drive structural reforms, creating unprecedented opportunities for the ALS and communities.

The Role

As a critical interim member of the executive team, you will provide high‑level strategic leadership across sector partnerships and key community development and justice reform initiatives, including Closing the Gap and the Aboriginal Justice Partnership, and ALS's participation in NSW Coalition of Peak Organisations.


Responsibilities

* Act for the CEO as required.
* Lead ALS representation in Closing the Gap, NSW CAPO, and external forums as delegated by the CEO.
* Maintain strong cross‑sector relationships with Aboriginal communities, funders, government stakeholders and sector partners.
* Support the executive team and CEO through delegated leadership of specific strategic projects, reviews and partnerships.
* Ensure accurate and timely reporting of deliverables.
* Contribute to executive‑level planning, risk management and governance reporting.
* Provide mentorship and support and identify opportunities to strengthen internal capability.


Skills Required

You identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and your background will ideally be from justice leadership, community development, ACCOs or related sectors. You're an experienced senior leader with ability to apply strategic and operational leadership, and a track record working collaboratively to deliver on strategy.

You also bring:

* Proven track record leading successful program delivery.
* Understanding of the National Closing the Gap Agreement, key justice policy issues and justice reform.
* Excellent communication, influencing, relationship building, and negotiation skills.
* Ability to motivate and inspire teams, provide mentoring and direction and set performance standards.
* Experience and confidence as a spokesperson, with excellent public communication capability.
* Knowledge, respect and support for Aboriginal cultural practices and deep understanding of the cultural, social and justice issues affecting Aboriginal communities.
