Engineer – Mechanical Reliability

Role Overview
Reporting to the Senior Reliability Engineer – Lead Smelter Maintenance, this residential role is responsible for driving reliability improvements across smelting operations through optimisation of maintenance strategies, failure elimination, and enhancement of condition monitoring programs. The position supports critical smelter assets such as furnaces, converters, material handling systems, gas handling and associated infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
* Utilise condition monitoring data to assess, manage and report on equipment health and risk across smelter assets.
* Manage statutory equipment.
* Improve asset reliability, eliminate production losses, maximise equipment availability and campaign life in a safe and cost‑effective manner.
* Deliver minor capital and improvement projects within the smelter to address reliability risks and operational constraints.
* Review, develop and continuously improve maintenance strategies aligned to smelting operations and asset criticality.
* Work closely with operations, maintenance and technical stakeholders to identify and implement engineering solutions to recurring failures, particularly in high‑temperature and corrosive environments.
* Conduct and facilitate root cause analyses (RCA) and implement sustainable corrective actions.
* Contribute to shutdown planning by identifying and prioritising reliability‑driven work scopes.
* Maintain and enhance condition monitoring programmes including vibration, thermography, oil analysis and NDT techniques relevant to smelter equipment.
* Mentor and support graduate engineers and vacation students.
Required Skills and Experience
* Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
* Demonstrated ability to analyse equipment performance and implement reliability improvements in a heavy industrial environment.
* Experience with maintenance management systems (SAP) and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
* Working knowledge of reliability methodologies such as Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
* Exposure to 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) is desirable.
* Strong communication skills with the ability to engage across operations and maintenance teams.

Desirable Experience
* 5 years experience in smelting, pyrometallurgical processing or similar high‑temperature processing environments.
* Familiarity with condition monitoring techniques such as vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis and NDT.
* Experience working with critical assets such as furnaces, converters, blowers and gas handling systems.
* SAP experience or similar CMMS proficiency.
