The Opportunity
We are seeking a Senior Technical Product Owner to lead and take full responsibility for Energy Management System (EMS) product development. This leadership role combines deep technical expertise with strategic thinking and strong project management capabilities. You will rally the engineering team, drive product development from concept to delivery, and work in a hyper-growth environment where comfort with ambiguity and entrepreneurial spirit are essential.
Key Responsibilities
Lead EMS product development lifecycle with full ownership and accountability, rallying and mentoring engineering teams
Develop sophisticated EMS algorithms utilising non-linear programming, dynamic programming, and optimisation techniques for power control and energy optimisation
Design and develop PLC-based control systems (Codesys) and HMI interfaces for energy storage and power management
Integrate HVDC / LVDC battery systems, inverters, and hybrid renewable solutions for grid and off-grid applications
Manage Linux server infrastructure and develop software solutions using Python and C for real-time control
Implement industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Ethernet / IP, PROFINET, MQTT)
Develop structured plans, set milestones, delegate effectively, and drive accountability across R&D and delivery functions
Interface with clients, prepare technical documentation, and provide training and support
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Control, or Mechatronics Engineering (advanced degree preferred)
5+ years in controls engineering and product development, preferably in renewable energy or power systems
Proven senior technical leadership with demonstrated accountability for product delivery
Strong expertise in Energy Management Systems (EMS) development and deployment
Advanced knowledge of non-linear programming, dynamic programming, and optimisation algorithms
Deep understanding of power control, grid integration, and battery energy storage systems
Strong proficiency in PLC programming (Codesys highly valued), HMI development, and control system integration
Solid IT skills: Linux server administration, Linux kernels, Python, and C programming
Experience with HVDC / LVDC battery systems, inverters, and industrial communication protocols
Strategic thinker comfortable with ambiguity, able to establish structure in fast-paced environments
Entrepreneurial mindset with ability to drive results and rally teams
Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills
Willingness to travel for project meetings, site visits, and commissioning
Desirable
Team leadership and mentoring experience in R&D and project delivery
Knowledge of Australian NEM and operational requirements for battery systems
Familiarity with generator integration, grid connections, and electrical design software (AutoCAD, EPLAN)
Understanding of microgrids, EV charging infrastructure, and DC distribution systems
