Overseeing planning, environmental assessments, and regulatory approvals on a high-profile infrastructure project ($100m+).
Our client is seeking an experienced Planning Approvals Manager to support the delivery of a major infrastructure project. This role is pivotal in managing environmental assessments, regulatory approvals, and stakeholder engagement to ensure successful project outcomes.
The Planning Approvals Manager will coordinate the development and exhibition of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), manage engagement with government agencies, and provide strategic input to project design to mitigate environmental impacts. The successful candidate will work closely with the Environmental Representative (ER) to ensure regulatory compliance, support post-approval activities, and manage all relevant advisors and contractors, including budget forecasting and invoice approvals.
Candidates must demonstrate exceptional stakeholder management, strong negotiation skills, and a proven ability to navigate complex environmental and planning frameworks. This role requires close collaboration with internal teams across divisions and external partners, including contractors, consultants, regulators, and community groups.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Coordinating planning and environmental assessment activities, including the EIS and approvals
• Managing environmental risks, compliance with regulations, and implementation of CSMPs etc
• Engaging with government agencies, regulators, and community stakeholders
• Providing strategic input to design and delivery to mitigate environmental impacts
• Supporting compliance through site inspections, document reviews, and corrective actions
• Facilitating post-approval activities and ensuring environmental obligations are met
• Preparing internal approvals, reports, and submissions to senior leadership and NSW Cabinet
• Managing budgets, invoices, claims, and variations for planning and environmental activities
• Leading negotiations to resolve commercial issues and secure project outcomes
Qualifications and Requirements:
• Tertiary qualification in environmental science, planning, engineering, or similar
• Minimum 8 years' experience in major infrastructure projects (ideally $100m+)
• Client side experience within NSW Government preferred
• Extensive knowledge of NSW environmental planning approvals and EPBC Act
• Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills
• Experience in managing project approvals including post-approvals and BDAR waivers
• Desirable: Experience working in Newcastle and securing environmental approvals for large-scale projects
