About These Opportunities

We are seeking two highly motivated and driven Research Fellows, with expertise in the areas of substance use and comorbid mental health research in young people, to join the NCYSUR Psychology research team led by Professor Leanne Hides. This team, working alongside industry partners, conducts applied clinical and translational research on the assessment, understanding and treatment of primary and comorbid alcohol and other drug (AOD) use in young people.

We are seeking to fill two Academic Level B positions as below:

Position 1: Full-time, fixed-term appointment through to 30 June 2027

This position will be directly involved in the delivery of the research projects funded by the NCYSUR through the Australian Government, Drug and Alcohol Program. Research will be focused on approved projects, including improving engagement and outcomes for young people in substance use treatment.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to engage in research to further your expertise and grow your research profile to achieve national recognition in the young people and substance use area.

Position 2: Part-time (50% FTE), fixed-term appointment through to 12 December 2026

This position will be directly involved in the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Meaningful Outcomes in Substance Use Treatment Centre of Research Excellence (CRE, 2022-2027). The CRE brings together leading experts across Australia and internationally to reduce the burden and cost of alcohol and other drug problems in Australia by implementing routine outcome monitoring into the alcohol and other drug sector to increase its capacity to deliver evidence-based, efficient and cost-effective care. Current research projects include a discrete choice experiment, co-design workshops, cluster randomised controlled trials implementation science, data linkage, data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence.

In this role, you will have the opportunityto engage in a series of applied clinical and translational research projects, to further your expertise and research profile in substance use and comorbid mental health problems.

As research focused academics at Level B, duties will include leading and undertaking quantitative data analyses, including working with large-scale longitudinal survey and administration data, to generate novel insights and contribute to high-quality, peer-reviewed research outputs. You'll develop and maintain strong working relationships with our clinical and research partners and other stakeholders to facilitate the delivery of current projects and develop future projects. You'll also contribute to Honours and HDR student supervision and manage internal and external service and engagement activities.


About You

* Completion (or near completion) of a PhD in psychology, public health or related field.

* A growing profile in research in the field of psychology, public health, or related field, demonstrated through a track record of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.

* Experience developing, managing and/or conducting high-quality collaborative quantitative research projects, including project management, data collection, data management, data analysis, and reporting.

* Experience using statistical/programming tools or packages, such as SPSS, Stata and/or R.

* Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to establish good working relationships with a range of stakeholders.

* Well-developed problem-solving skills, with an ability to forward plan, prioritise tasks to meet deadlines and work with a high level of adaptability, both independently and as part of a team.

* Evidence of contribution towards obtaining external grant funding.

* Experience in meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with active contributions to external activities.

* Clinical training/experience in substance use treatment would be advantageous.
