Primary objective
In consultation with the Cropping Group Leader, this position will assist in the development, maintenance and application of a
range of extension activities. These activities cover cropping, horticulture, forestry, pastures industries and support to the Big
Rivers Region on Plant Industries related extension. The position will also undertake some research and development activities,
with an extension focus.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Assist in the development of extension plans by liaising with key internal stakeholders (DAF NT agricultural staff) and external
stakeholders (primary producers, industry representatives and researchers). Also help maintain the extension calendar of
events.
2. Assist with the planning and implementation of extension activities, in accordance with Extension Plans. This will involve the
conduct of extension activities (production of extension material, one-to-one farm visits, field days, demonstration sites and
extension-related social media content)
3. Assist in the planning and performance of all aspects of research and development activities based on industry needs and
transfer of technology to the industry partners to assist agricultural enterprises throughout the Northern Territory.
4. Collect and collate data associated with research, development and extension projects and prepare basic reports.
5. Assist in writing and publication of articles for industry, to promote adoption of new technologies and methodologies that
maximise profitability and sustainability.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Degree or relevant diploma in agriculture, horticulture or another relevant/equivalent degree or minimum 5 years' experience
in agricultural extension.
2. Demonstrated sound knowledge and understanding of agricultural extension.
3. Proven ability to communicate effectively with primary producers, industry representatives and researchers to encourage
sharing and effective use of complementary knowledge and skills within multidisciplinary project teams.
4. Contemporary knowledge and skills in the operation of computer systems including spreadsheets, databases, word processing
and statistical software relevant to the position.
5. Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a team, and without supervision. An ability to plan, prioritise and conduct work with
flexibility. Ability to adapt to changes in duties and priorities, and to meet deadlines.
6. C class drivers' licence.
Desirable
1. Postgraduate or graduate study in social science, agricultural science or equivalent and relevant work experience.
2. Experience working in agricultural science.
3. Having local connection with growers and industry.
4. Showing initiative, self-motivation and overcoming challenges with out-of-the-box ideas.
Further information
1. Whilst this is an ongoing position with Northern Territory Government the incumbent may be seconded for a fixed term to an
industry organisation.
2. This position may require a considerable amount of travel to rural properties.
