An Executive contract commencing 31/03/2026 of up to 4 years may be offered.
The Northern Territory Government is looking for an exceptional legal practitioner to join the Solicitor-General's Chambers in a senior advisory and advocacy role. This position offers the opportunity to work at the centre of government, providing authoritative guidance on some of the most significant legal issues affecting the Territory.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will be relied upon for sophisticated legal analysis and clear strategic advice across major, complex and sensitive matters. You will work closely with legal officers in the Attorney-General's Department, independent statutory officers, senior executives and agencies across government. Your work will often involve constitutional questions, the interpretation of legislation, and matters involving executive and judicial powers.
You will represent the Territory and its agencies in high-level litigation. Appearances will be required in Territory courts, the Federal Court, the High Court of Australia and a range of tribunals. You may lead matters yourself or work as junior counsel, typically alongside the Solicitor-General. You will play a key role in preparing written submissions and helping resolve complex disputes.
Qualifications
Success in this position requires a high level of legal expertise and judgement. You will need to have the right to practise in the Northern Territory and bring substantial experience in constitutional law, public and administrative law, statutory interpretation and commercial matters. Strong advocacy skills are essential, as is the ability to work confidently with senior government stakeholders and to manage sensitive issues with discretion.
A deep understanding of the constitutional framework of the Northern Territory is vital, including the operation of the Constitution, the Northern Territory (Self-Government) Act 1978 (Cth) and the Territory court system. Familiarity with the workings of government—at Territory, State, federal and local levels—will be important in navigating the complex environment in which this role operates.
