Surface Grinder
The Surface Grinder is responsible for setting up and operating surface grinding machines to produce flat and contoured surfaces of mold components and tooling. This individual works from blueprints and technical drawings to perform precision grinding tasks with a focus on tight tolerances and smooth finishes. The role requires a strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and commitment to producing quality work that meets internal and customer expectations.
Key Responsibilities
* Machine Setup & Operation
* Set up and operate precision surface grinders with horizontal or vertical spindles.
* Interpret and follow blueprints, CAD layouts, and job travelers to determine grinding requirements.
* Select appropriate grinding wheels based on material type, tolerances, and surface finish requirements.
* Position and secure workpieces using magnetic chucks, fixtures, or directly to machine tables.
* Dress grinding wheels manually or with automated devices to maintain proper form and sharpness.
* Grinding Processes
* Plan the sequence of operations for grinding flat, contoured, or round surfaces.
* Adjust machine settings (speed, feed rate, table travel, etc.) to optimize performance and quality.
* Use coolant and appropriate grinding techniques to minimize heat and ensure precision finishes.
* Perform OD/ID grinding on round components as needed using cylindrical grinding equipment.
* Inspection & Quality
* Inspect ground parts using precision instruments such as micrometers, height gauges, dial indicators, gauge blocks, and comparators.
* Ensure ground components meet required dimensional, surface finish, and concentricity tolerances.
* Record inspections and steel traceability information as required per internal standards.
* Tool Room Support
* Laser engraves components per drawing and internal processes.
* Coordinate with the Lead Mold Maker to support tool builds and meet program timelines.
* Support internal customers (Program Managers, Engineering, Scheduling) by completing jobs to specifications and deadlines.
* Complete internal quality documentation and assist with inspection processes.
* Work with the scheduling team to update job statuses and adjust workload priorities.
* Identify and suggest improvements in tooling processes, equipment, software, and departmental organization.
* Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, following 5S and lean manufacturing practices.
* Collaborate with other toolmakers, machinists, and engineers to solve manufacturing challenges.
