The Sovereign Hill Museums Association is a not-for profit community-based organisation that includes: Sovereign Hill Outdoor Museum, Sovereign Hill Hotel, AURA and Narmbool, the Australian Centre for Rare Trades and Arts and the Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections. It cares for a nationally and internationally significant collection of over 150,000 objects and protects the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Victorian gold rush. We are an Australian tourism icon that attracts some 500,000 visitors annually. The Outdoor Museum is internationally renowned as a living museum featuring rare trades, and programs and experiences that interpret a pivotal point in Australia's history. In all, some 350 staff work to bring our gold-rush story to life. They are supported by over 250 volunteers. Tour Guides (Mine & Surface) are responsible for providing visitors to Sovereign Hill with an accurate representation of the gold mining era of the Ballarat Goldfields. Delivery of historic information is undertaken in the form of working and static displays, within fully guided and self-guided tours, through various exhibits both above and below ground. These tours and demonstrations are delivered in both English, and other languages such as Mandarin. Applicants with any languages other than English, including Auslan, are encouraged to apply. The Mine and Guides department includes tour ticket sales, working machinery, tours on the surface of the Outdoor Museum, and 700 metres of underground drives. This also includes two major visitor transporters: the inclined rail system and the quartz mine train - both of which the Tour Guides are trained to operate and drive. Gives will deliver tours in English - those with a second language, including Auslan, can be delivering tours and demonstrations in their second language/s, subject to group dynamics and bookings. This position is casual, ranging from 4 to 7.5 hours per day. Casual guides can expect a couple of shifts a week - which will increase during school holiday periods. Applicants must be available to work a rotating roster of weekdays, weekends, public holidays, and school holidays. They must also be comfortable working in an underground environment for an average of 45 minutes, with groups ranging in age, background and ability, up to 33 people in capacity.
