The Forensic Chemistry Unit, part of the Forensic Science Branch in Berrimah, plays a critical role in supporting criminal investigations. The Unit provides specialised analytical chemistry services, examining forensic evidence using techniques such as chromatography and spectroscopy to identify substances and deliver expert evidence for court proceedings.

As a Senior Research Scientist,your key role will be to manage and coordinate the development and delivery of new technology and reliable forensic testing capabilities, including the use of Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LCMS) to support the Northern Territory justice system. In addition, you will develop, validate, and document analytical methods in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 and NATA standards, and provide leadership by mentoring and training others to achieving high-quality testing outcomes and operational excellence. You will also participate in research programs appropriate to the relevant forensic discipline and communicate regularly with other scientists to ensure testing is performed at the highest level and compliant with Workplace Health & Safety and forensic accreditation requirements.

To be successful for this role, you will hold a Bachelor of Science (BSc) or a qualification in a relevant scientific discipline, supported by extensive knowledge of contemporary laboratory techniques and experience working in an accredited laboratory environment. Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant discipline, project management expertise, and experience in delivering new analytical services will be highly regarded.
