Primary objectiveLead the strategic planning and delivery of events, marketing and communications for the Darwin Waterfront precinct, driving visitation, engagement and economic return. The role is responsible for delivering an annual events program, managing marketing and digital channels, sponsorships and budgets, and providing strategic communications and media advice to support the Corporation's objectives and reputation.
Context statementThe Darwin Waterfront Corporation (DWC) is responsible for developing, managing and promoting the Darwin Waterfront precinct as a vibrant place to live, work and visit.
Key duties and responsibilities
* Develop, review and implement the Darwin Waterfront Events and Marketing Strategy in alignment with the Corporation's strategic priorities and brand.
* Plan, deliver and evaluate a diverse, year-round calendar of events and activations, including corporation-led events such as New Year's Eve and seasonal programs, as well as oversight of third-party events.
* Lead and manage strategic campaigns and branding across website, digital, media and promotional channels.
* Manage the events and marketing budget, including planning, monitoring, reporting and compliance with delegations.
* Lead and manage a small team, including two event coordination staff members, to achieve team and organisational objectives.
* Build and maintain effective relationships with precinct stakeholders, community groups, tourism operators, government agencies and sponsors, and lead negotiations to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes aligned with the Corporation's objectives.
* Oversee the precinct's permit system for events, activities and filming/photography, ensuring compliance with by-laws, organisational policies, safety requirements and operational standards.
* Create and manage sponsorship opportunities to support events and precinct activations.
* Provide high-level corporate communications support to the Board, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and management, including coordination of the Annual Report.
* Coordinate proactive and reactive media management, including preparing releases, briefings and spokesperson responses, and acting as the Corporation's delegated media spokesperson for events and related matters.
* Oversee complaints and incident escalation relating to events, marketing and communications, ensuring risks to reputation are managed appropriately.
* Identify trends, insights and innovative opportunities to enhance visitation, engagement and commercial outcomes for the precinct.
Selection criteria
Essential
* Proven ability to develop, implement and evaluate innovative and effective marketing and communications strategies.
* Demonstrated experience in event management, including planning, risk management, compliance and budget oversight, with a focus on results and return on investment.
* Experience in proactive and reactive media management in a diverse and multi-stakeholder environment.
* High-level communication skills, including the ability to write for diverse audiences, from corporate and regulatory texts to engaging and persuasive marketing materials.
* Sound financial management skills, including budget preparation, monitoring and reporting.
* Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgement and professionalism in high-profile, politically sensitive environments, and to apply strategic, lateral and analytical thinking to resolve complex issues.
* Proven interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to build trust, collaborate effectively, influence positive outcomes, and effectively manage and motivate others to achieve business objectives.
* Demonstrated capacity to manage competing priorities and deadlines with composure, adaptability and sound judgement under pressure.
Desirable
* Tertiary qualifications in marketing, communications, journalism, business or a related discipline.
* Possess a current driver's licence and Working with Children Clearance Notice (Ochre Card) or be able to obtain.
* Knowledge of Darwin's tourism sector, events landscape and/or commercial environment.
