We now have an exciting opportunity available for a Infrastructure Transformation and Research Lead to join us in our Infrastructure Delivery Gas Engineering Solutions team on a full‑time, permanent basis.
Reporting to the Head of Concept Engineering and Research, you will play a key role in leading the identification, coordination and integration of research and development activities that future‑prove APA’s gas infrastructure, identifying emerging technologies, energy transition strategies and decarbonisation solutions, ensuring these are systematically embedded into APA’s core engineering practices and projects.
The location for this role is flexible and hybrid; we will consider locations all over Australia.
Key Responsibilities
Own and maintain the Gas Infrastructure R&D roadmap aligned to Net Zero goals
Manage end‑to‑end R&D program budget, resources and delivery
Engage external research bodies (APGA, RSC, GIRA) to influence agendas and secure funding
Translate R&D outcomes into BAU via knowledge sharing and standards updates
Screen emerging technologies for feasibility and inclusion in new gas opportunities
Track R&D program performance and report transition of proven technologies into engineering standards
Your background
Senior engineering background with R&D program leadership in energy/gas infrastructure
Experience managing research budgets and external research providers
Knowledge of decarbonisation, energy transition and Net Zero strategies
Ability to translate research outcomes into practical engineering applications
Industry body engagement experience (APGA, GIRA or equivalent)
Strong executive and technical stakeholder management
About the Team The Concept Engineering & Research team is a specialised group that leads APA’s front‑end engineering work, shaping the earliest stages of new pipeline, storage and processing projects. They deliver high‑quality feasibility studies, technical insights and engineering concepts that underpin strategic decisions and investment cases across the business.
The team also drives APA’s gas infrastructure R&D agenda, exploring emerging technologies, future‑fuel readiness and international best practice. Known for their technical depth, innovation and strong collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, they play a pivotal role in guiding APA’s long‑term infrastructure strategy.
