Principal Research Fellow/Professorial Research Fellow – Industry Safety and Health is a research‑focused position within the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC) at the University of Queensland, based at the St Lucia campus. About this Opportunity
This role is for a Professorial Research Fellow who will study occupational health and safety in major hazardous industries, lead a research team, and drive funding and publishing activity.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct research on occupational health and safety in mining, mineral processing, and other high‑risk industries, including
o Emergency response and management
o Fire and explosions
o Spontaneous combustion of coal
o Fatigue, respirable dust, noise and psychosocial risk
o Major hazard management and critical controls
o Health and safety statistics analysis
o Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems
o Other relevant OHS domains
* Produce high‑quality research outputs and lead authorship on funded projects
* Teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses and deliver professional development to industry practitioners
* Supervise and mentor junior academics and research students, including acting as principal supervisor to HDR students
* Lead a research team and facilitate engagement opportunities for supervisees
* Show senior leadership and citizenship within the university, contributing to governance and staff well‑being
* Ensure compliance with legislation, UQ Code of Conduct, and relevant occupational health and safety legislation
About You
* PhD in a relevant discipline with a sustained record of impactful research
* International recognition and high‑quality publications in peer‑reviewed journals
* Successful leadership of research teams and attainment of significant external funding
* Robust record of supervising Honours and HDR students to completion
* Demonstrated internal service roles and external leadership activities
* Excellent communication, interpersonal and consultative skills
Level E Additional Expectations
* Outstanding record of research training and research policy contributions at national and international levels
* Strategic research agenda leadership and secure funding from institutional and commercial sources
* Exceptional record of supervising honours and HDR students to successful completion
* High‑level external leadership in national and international activities
