Curis Recruitment is proud to partner with a fantastic Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service in Far North Queensland to help them find a Counsellor – Non-Residential Rehabilitation Program to join their team.
In this role, you will deliver counselling, case management, and culturally protected therapeutic interventions to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing alcohol and other drug (AOD) dependency. You will work both individually and as part of a multidisciplinary Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) team to support clients and families, with a focus on harm reduction, relapse prevention, and holistic recovery.
This is a FIFO position based in Cairns, servicing Cape York communities. You will fly or drive out Monday morning and return Friday afternoon, ensuring you are back in Cairns for the weekend.

- Salary range $104,112 – $113,727 + 12% superannuation
- Weekly LAFHA of $700.00

Key Responsibilities
- Provide holistic intake, assessment, counselling, case management, and crisis intervention services to AOD clients
- Develop and implement evidence-based client care plans, including harm reduction and relapse prevention strategies
- Deliver individual and group-based therapeutic interventions, psycho-educational programs, and community education initiatives
- Apply trauma-informed practice and culturally safe approaches in all client interactions
- Maintain accurate client records and contribute to continuous quality improvement
- Work collaboratively within the SEWB team and with other community stakeholders to ensure integrated service delivery
- Support clients and communities through cultural activities and initiatives that strengthen resilience
- Travel regularly to Cape York communities via light aircraft or 4WD
Selection Criteria
- Relevant qualification in counselling, psychology, or social work
- Registration with AHPRA, AASW, or ACA (or eligibility for membership)
- Minimum 3 years’ experience providing counselling or therapeutic interventions, preferably in AOD and/or mental health
- Experience in case management, intake, and assessment practices
- Ability to deliver culturally safe counselling services and communicate effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in accordance with community protocols
- Understanding of the historical and contemporary issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, particularly in Cape York
- Current Queensland Driver’s Licence
- Current Blue Card or AHPRA registration exemption
- Current AFP National Police Check or willingness to obtain
