Primary objective
Manage a small work unit and provide expert guidance and response to inquiries and complaints about access (Freedom of
Information) and correction decisions and the handling of privacy issues by government organisations under the Northern
Territory Information Act 2002. Provide authoritative assessment and investigation services and reports for the Information
Commissioner.
Key duties and responsibilities
• Ensure day-to-day delivery of the Information Commissioner's complaints, training, advice and reporting functions.
* Assess, investigate, and resolve complaints received under the Information Act 2002.
* Develop and maintain the Office's role as a trusted source of policy advice for public sector organisations and members
of the public in relation to the Information Act 2002.
* Prepare, support and conduct training and presentations, including the development of educational materials and
guidelines.
* Supervise complaints officers and support staff to ensure provision of a professional and timely service to stakeholders.
* Assist with the management of Ombudsman matters and other complaints and enquiries as directed by the
Ombudsman/Information Commissioner.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Expert understanding of freedom of information and privacy laws and the role and functions of the Information
Commissioner, with a demonstrated ability to interpret and apply legislative provisions in an operational capacity.
1. High level oral and written communications skills, including the ability to prepare reports dealing with a wide range
complex legal, factual and policy issues.
3. Well-developed skills, knowledge, and experience relevant to investigation and resolution of complaints, including those
required for the collection and analysis of evidence.
4. Excellent conceptual and analytical skills, with the ability to research, critically review and present accurate conclusions
and effective recommendations.
5. Demonstrated ability to operate autonomously and as a leader of a small team, including managing a workload of
complex cases to a timely resolution, supervising team members, and reporting on performance as required.
6. Proven ability to communicate well with all stakeholders and be sensitive to the needs of people from diverse culture
and backgrounds.
Desirable
1. Law degree and practical experience in public administration.
2. Formal qualifications and experience in mediation and conducting investigations.
