Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital is seeking passionate Unaccredited Trainees to join our General Surgery Department in 2026!

HNELHD facilitates a WBA program and was the first LHD to deliver the WBA and now has more than 15 years’ experience. The HNELHD WBA runs over 6 months is one of the largest in Australia and is based in Newcastle with a regional hub in Tamworth.

Where you'll be working

With 348 treatment spaces, we are the major Rural Referral Hospital to the North West of NSW. We conduct over 9000 surgical procedures per annum over 5 theatre spaces; with the new facility boasting an additional 3 theatre rooms which have been built for future growth.

Uniquely you will find this position will offer you more hands-on supervised theatre time than your metropolitan colleagues. You will be supporting five General Surgeons, 3FTE SET Trainees and 4FTE Junior Medical Officers.

You will be required to equally participate in the General Surgery after-hours/on-call roster, including 1:4 weekends.

Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital encourages collaboration and collegiate relationships across multi-disciplinary teams ensuring the best service delivery. We are seeking Unaccredited Trainees who are eager to develop professional skills to put them on the path of progressing to accredited training

What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of the role is to provide effective clinical management of general surgical and urology patients, under appropriate supervision, whilst developing expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment. The unaccredited trainee is the key person who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality.

Decision-making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the unaccredited trainee’s skills, knowledge and experience. They will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding a patient’s care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.

We are a hub for the AMC approved WBA program and our current waitlist for placement is less than 12 months.

Qualifications -

- Experience and qualifications commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgement and expertise.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team as shown by diligence, punctuality, organisational/ record keeping, empathy, team work and a professional manner.
- High level communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Skills in time management, prioritisation and problem solving.
- Commitment to own continuing professional development and self-education.
- Commitment to quality improvement and patient safety.
- Minimum of 6 months experience in Urology/ General Surgery.
