We are seeking a highly capable and motivated Senior Building Surveyor to join our Development Assessment and Certification team within a progressive and customer-focused environment.
This is a key leadership role where you will guide a team of assessing officers responsible for managing a high volume of development applications, construction certificates and complying development certificates.
You will also apply your specialist expertise to undertake registered certifier and principal certifier functions on behalf of Council, ensuring safe, compliant and high-quality built outcomes for the community.
Working closely with the Section Manager Building, you will help shape team direction, strengthen service delivery, and contribute to continuous improvement across systems, processes and customer experience.
Your key focus areas include
* Leading, mentoring, coaching and developing staff, including performance planning and recruitment participation
* Coordinating day‐to‐day team operations and contributing to policy and procedural improvements
* Undertaking compliance, regulatory and certification functions in accordance with legislation
* Investigating and resolving complex building and compliance matters, including stakeholder disputes
* Providing high-level technical advice, reports and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders
* Representing Council in formal settings including court, panels and industry forums
* Undertaking registered certifier and principal certifier responsibilities for complex building types
* Supporting continuous improvement and business improvement initiatives within the building team
You are a confident and experienced building professional who leads with integrity, clarity and a strong customer focus. You take a proactive, solution-oriented approach to development assessment and certification while ensuring compliance with legislation and Council's strategic direction.
You are a natural leader who enjoys developing others, building capability within teams, and fostering a collaborative and supportive working environment.
You bring strong technical judgement, sound communication skills and the ability to manage complex and sometimes sensitive stakeholder matters with professionalism and balance.
Importantly, you are comfortable operating in a fast‐paced regulatory environment where accuracy, accountability and sound decision‐making are essential.
You will bring
* Degree or Graduate Diploma in Building (or equivalent relevant qualification) and extensive experience in development assessment and certification
* Registration with NSW Fair Trading as a Building Surveyor (Restricted – all classes of buildings) under the Building and Development Certifiers Regulation 2020
* Strong knowledge of the National Construction Code (NCC) and Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979
* Proven experience in building certification, compliance and regulatory assessment
* Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor and develop staff in a technical environment
* Strong report writing, investigation and evidence-gathering skills suitable for legal or formal proceedings
* High-level communication and stakeholder engagement skills across internal and external audiences
* Class C Driver's Licence
