Offer description

The Australian is seeking an ambitious and energetic reporter to strengthen the masthead's coverage of the technology sector — one of the country's fastest-growing and most dynamic industries.

This role is ideal for an early-to-mid-career journalist with a proven track record of breaking news and delivering sharp, well-researched analysis. We are looking for someone with a keen eye for exclusives, a strong understanding of the technology and media landscape, and a collaborative mindset to work closely with The Australian's Technology Editor and wider Business team.

If you are passionate about covering everything from high-growth start-ups to the world's largest tech companies — and telling compelling stories that matter to investors, innovators and policymakers — we would love to hear from you.

Responsibilities

* Break exclusive stories and provide insightful reporting on Australia's venture capital sector, technology policy and regulation, and the broader tech industry's financial landscape, including its ties to major capital allocators like super funds.
* Cover a diverse range of tech companies and trends—from software to social media—through clear, jargon-free financial analysis of earnings, market movements, and industry shifts.
* Create compelling, multi-platform journalism, including online articles, print features, video segments, and podcast contributions, with sharp headlines and clean, publishable copy.
* Develop original, enterprise stories that go beyond the daily news cycle, while managing multiple assignments with accuracy and depth under deadline pressure.
* Collaborate closely across teams and support editorial leadership by contributing to newsletters, taking on long-form features, occasionally deputising for the Technology Editor, and participating in the Sunday work roster.

Who are you?

* At least three years' proven journalism experience with a demonstrated ability to break stories. A good understanding of how to source information from courts, regulators, and private company filings.
* A strong commitment to building a network of contacts and generating original story ideas.
* The ability to work calmly to tight deadlines.
* Prior experience reporting on consumer technology (desirable but not essential).
* Strong news judgement and the ability to work independently while taking direction.
* A digital-first approach to journalism and excellent attention to detail.
* A strong interest in technology, venture capital, financial markets, or the ability to develop expertise quickly.

This role is based in Sydney.

Please note that opportunities for sponsored travel will be minimal, and any such trips must be vetted by the Technology Editor and appropriately disclosed.
