Cape York Land Council is the Native Title Representative Body (NTRB) for the Cape York region, performing statutory functions under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth). Through its work, CYLC supports Aboriginal people to assert, establish and manage their rights and interests in land and sea, delivering cultural, social and economic outcomes.
This role sits within a multidisciplinary environment where anthropology, law and community engagement intersect, and where professional expertise contributes directly to meaningful, place-based outcomes.
The Role
Reporting to the Manager of Anthropology and Research, you will provide anthropological advice and research to support native title claims and broader CYLC projects across Cape York.
Your work will involve identifying Traditional Owners and native title holders, interpreting anthropological and historical materials, and contributing to consultation processes with Aboriginal communities. The role combines desktop research, report writing and extended fieldwork, including travel to remote communities.
You will be responsible for producing clear, well-researched and defensible anthropological advice, both written and verbal, and contributing to project teams in a collaborative and professional environment.
About You
You will be a capable and culturally aware professional with the ability to work effectively in complex and sensitive environments.
You will bring:
* Tertiary qualifications in Anthropology or a related discipline
* Demonstrated understanding of the Native Title Act and applied anthropology
* Experience in anthropological research, analysis and report writing
* Ability to engage respectfully with Aboriginal people and communities
* Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
* Capacity to undertake fieldwork in remote locations
Additional Requirements
* Current Australian Driver’s Licence
* Willingness and ability to travel across Cape York (including 4WD and light aircraft)
* High level of professionalism, discretion and confidentiality
