Senior Workplace Strategist – Interior Design (Design & Construct Focus)
Overview
A Senior Workplace Strategist with a background in interior design is sought to lead the strategic planning and design direction of commercial fit-out projects across Australia. This role is ideal for a design professional who combines strategic thinking with practical knowledge of the D&C (Design and Construct) project lifecycle. The strategist will work at the intersection of workplace strategy, design development, and project delivery—guiding clients from early visioning through to implementation.
The Role
The Senior Workplace Strategist will be responsible for shaping innovative and functional workplaces that align with each client's business objectives, operational needs, and workforce behaviours. Working across national portfolios, this individual will facilitate discovery sessions, develop workplace strategies, and translate them into actionable design briefs for fit-out teams. They will collaborate closely with project managers, designers, and construction professionals to ensure seamless integration from concept to completion.
Key Responsibilities
Workplace Strategy & Planning
* Lead strategic planning for workplace design projects including space analysis, headcount forecasting, and user profiling.
* Facilitate workshops and visioning sessions with client stakeholders to define project goals and key design principles.
* Conduct site assessments and space audits to inform planning decisions and test-fit layouts.
* Develop workplace briefs, zoning strategies, and space programs to guide design direction.
* Produce business cases and scenario planning documents to support workplace change initiatives.
* Recommend settings, layouts, and technologies that enable hybrid work, collaboration, and wellbeing.
Design & Construct Integration
* Translate strategic insights into functional design concepts in collaboration with the interior design team.
* Provide ongoing input into interior layouts, furniture specifications, and finishes selection throughout D&C delivery.
* Review design documentation to ensure alignment with workplace strategy, user needs, and compliance standards.
* Support on-site implementation and provide input during construction phases to preserve design intent.
* Coordinate with project managers, contractors, and consultants to deliver integrated project outcomes.
Stakeholder & Client Engagement
* Serve as a key point of contact for clients throughout strategy and design phases.
* Build strong relationships with decision-makers across property, operations, and executive teams.
* Communicate complex design and workplace concepts clearly and persuasively.
* Provide post-occupancy reviews and success metrics to evaluate performance and user satisfaction.
Team Leadership & Resource Management
* Mentor junior strategists and designers, promoting collaboration and continuous learning.
* Support workload planning and quality assurance across concurrent national projects.
* Contribute to the refinement of workplace strategy tools, templates, and methodologies.
Commercial Oversight & Reporting
* Assist with proposal development, scope definition, and fee structuring for strategic design services.
* Track timeframes, budgets, and resource allocation for strategic planning phases.
* Ensure compliance with Australian codes, procurement requirements, and client-specific guidelines.
Candidate Profile
* Tertiary qualifications in Interior Design, Architecture, or a related field.
* Minimum of 8 years’ experience in commercial interior design and workplace strategy within the Australian market.
* Strong working knowledge of the D&C fit-out process, from brief to build.
* Demonstrated ability to run workshops, translate workplace needs into design outcomes, and communicate with senior stakeholders.
* Experience with workplace transformation programs, change management or hybrid working models is highly desirable.
* Confident working across multiple sectors including corporate, government, and institutional.
* High-level proficiency in design tools, reporting platforms, and presentation software.
* Strong interpersonal, analytical, and facilitation skills.
Location & Travel
This is a nationally focused role, with projects delivered across capital cities and regional hubs. Occasional interstate travel may be required based on project needs.
