Primary objective
As a member of the school leadership team provide educational and administrative leadership and ensure the provision of
quality educational programs for students with mild/severe intellectual and/or multiple and profound disabilities.
Context statement
Katherine High School is the only government secondary school in Katherine. It provides an educational service to students
from Year 7 to Year 12. In the Senior Years students are provided with multiple achievement pathways to ensure they
receive the education most appropriate to their needs. The school caters to a diverse population from a range of different
social, educational and cultural backgrounds. Katherine High School operates a Special Needs Annexe onsite to provide
students with disabilities the chance to achieve success. The school takes great pride in its inclusive practices and works

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide leadership to teachers in matters relating to curriculum including Modified/NTCET, student welfare and
behaviour management for adolescents from Year 7 – Year 12 who have mild intellectual and/or disabilities and or
extreme behaviours.
2. Provide administrative support in the organisation of special needs provision at the school including EAP’s, NCCD data
and the management of school council support staff.
3. Provide leadership and support in the implementation of school policy, procedures and strategic plans to achieve
improvement in partnership with the school community.
4. Provide advice and support to the principal on educational, financial and administrative matters in relation to Special
Needs Provision in order to achieve educational outcomes and the goals of the School Improvement Plan.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Registration with the Teacher Registration Board of the Northern Territory, a Current Working with Children Clearance
Notice and ability to interact effectively with people from different cultures.
2. Proven leadership in the delivery of Australian Curriculum including interventions, educational programs and
management of student welfare and/or behaviour management programs for adolescents with disabilities.
3. Proven ability to lead teams and mentor staff.
4. Proven highly effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, enabling the development of productive
partnerships and networks.
5. Strong knowledge of current and emerging educational theory and research, particularly relating to leadership and
special education.
Desirable
1. Further qualifications in special education, educational leadership, or management.
