The Opportunity

We are looking for a Building Surveying Cadet to join our Development Assessment and Compliance Division.

This cadetship allows you to earn a full-time salary while completing approved tertiary studies in Building Surveying. You will be supported by experienced Building Surveyors, gain practical on-the-job experience, and progressively build the technical and professional skills required to work in local government certification and compliance.

The position provides exposure to a broad range of building surveying activities across residential and commercial development. On completion of the cadetship and qualification, you will be job-ready for future employment as a Building Surveyor.

This opportunity is suited to someone who is committed to study, motivated to learn, and interested in a career that balances technical knowledge, field work, regulation, and community outcomes.

What you will be doing

* Undertake structured workplace learning alongside your studies.
* Assist with the assessment of Development Applications and Construction Certificates.
* Learn and apply relevant planning and building legislation, including the National Construction Code and Australian Standards.
* Support Council's certification and compliance functions.
* Assist with fire safety assessment and inspection activities across a range of building classes.
* Support assessments under Section 68 approvals and related local government activities.
* Respond to customer enquiries and contribute to quality customer service outcomes.
* Your time will be split between office-based work and supervised field activities.

About you

You are someone genuinely interested in building surveying and motivated to commit to both work and study. You may be in your second year of a Building Surveying degree, or a mature age applicant with relevant life or work experience who is eligible to enrol in a Graduate Diploma in Building Surveying. You bring strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team, along with the self motivation to work independently with appropriate guidance. You are willing to learn, seek feedback, and apply new knowledge, and you demonstrate sound judgement, professionalism, and the ability to maintain confidentiality. You also have appropriate literacy, numeracy, and digital skills to meet study and workplace requirements, together with an understanding of work health and safety principles.
