McArthur is seeking for a principal advisor to establish and maintain strong relationships about safety and quality for people with lived experience of mental health issues.
About the role
The principal advisor is responsible for initiating, establishing and maintaining strong relationships and consultation with a national network of stakeholders about safety and quality for people with lived experience of mental health issues. The principal advisor works closely with the program director and is required to collaborate across a number of the Commission teams, particularly regarding work on the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards, measurement of safety and quality in mental health and partnering with consumers. The principal advisor represents the Commission in relevant forums and provides high level specialist expertise and strategic advice to the executive and the Chief Executive Officer.
Responsibilities
4. Provide strategic, clinical and policy advice about improving safety and quality for people with lived experience of mental health issues in the Australian health system
5. Maintain awareness of current regulatory, clinical, policy and research developments in mental health, anticipate their impact on the work area and respond appropriately to mitigate risk
6. Understand the standards, legislation and policies that apply in the mental health sector, including the NSQHS Standards and the National Safety and Quality Mental Health Standards for Community Managed Organisations (NSQMH Standards for CMOs) and how they apply to the Commission's work
7. Develop guidance materials to address safety and quality gaps for people with mental health issues and support health services to meet the requirements of the NSQHS Standards and the NSQMH Standards for CMOs
8. Establish and maintain strong relationships with a national network of stakeholders to promote and support implementation of the Commission's mental health program
9. Work independently and with limited supervision to develop the mental health work program and determine how the work is done
10. Undertake project management activities including:
planning and documenting projects
managing the resources of the project
implementing, monitoring and reporting on progress
providing recommendations about managing risk, identifying problems and proposing possible solutions
reporting on project progress and outcomes
managing project deliverables to completion
Liaise and coordinate with program teams within the Commission to gain cooperation to deliver the outcomes of the mental health program and provide input to their work.
The successful candidate will have:
11. Demonstrated ability to apply expert specialist knowledge regarding mental health to situations involving a high level of complexity

19. Advanced knowledge and understanding of the delivery of mental health care in Australia, particularly in hospital settings
20. Advanced current specialist, clinical and policy knowledge and understanding of the safety and quality issues influencing people with lived experience of mental health issues
21. Extensive and detailed knowledge of the Australian healthcare system, particularly the regulatory, clinical and policy frameworks and their relevance and application to people with lived experience of mental health issues accessing healthcare services
22. Extensive knowledge of stakeholders and relevant interest groups regarding mental health at a national level and within the states and territories
23. Knowledge of workplace participation, diversity, occupational health and safety principles and practice.
Qualifications and experience
24. Relevant tertiary qualifications in health
25. Experience working as a mental health professional
26. Extensive experience in planning, development and implementation of policy and guidance regarding people with lived experience of mental health issues
27. Extensive experience in writing for different audiences and in different formats
28. Experience in research and or analysis in mental health
29. High level analytical and problem-solving skills.
