The ANU College of Asia & the Pacific (CAP) leads intellectual engagement with the Asia-Pacific region through research, teaching and contributions to public debate, and seeks to set the international standard for scholarship concerning the region. The College hosts the largest number of regional experts and specialist academic programs in the English-speaking world, and plays a vital role in informing public policy and Australia's intellectual engagement with the societies, cultures and economies of Asia and the Pacific.

The School of Culture, History and Language (CHL) is the focus of research and teaching in Asian and Pacific humanities, social sciences and languages and seeks to build excellence in understanding and capability in engaging with the Asia and Pacific region. The key disciplines that are represented in the School are anthropology, archaeology, cultural studies, gender studies, history, linguistics, and languages, all contributing to the foundational knowledge of Asia and the Pacific.

CHL is a dynamic and diverse community of scholars and professional staff. Effective administration and service excellence is a vital component of the School's work in providing the highest quality education experience to its students, in supporting its academic staff, and ensuring the continuing operational excellent of the School.

**The Opportunity**

The ANU College of Asia and the Pacific has a unique transdisciplinary and interregional mandate, and the CHL exemplifies this special perspective on academic excellence. Our research is organised around themes of Culture, History, Language, and Environment across the disciplines of Anthropology; Archaeology and Natural History; Gender, Media and Cultural Studies; Languages; Linguistics; and History.

CHL is a community of researchers dedicated to investigating and learning with and about the people, languages, and societies of Asia and the Pacific. This excellence underpins the cultural knowledge and expertise of our scholars and keeps us at the forefront of language learning and research.

The School of Culture, History and Language (CHL) seeks to appoint a Lecturer, Japanese Language and Studies (Level B) to contribute to the Japanese language program. This program, one of the largest language programs at the ANU, boasts a comprehensive range of Japanese language courses from zero-starters to near-native speakers. In addition to conventional language-centred courses at the beginning and intermediate levels, we offer a range of content-oriented courses at the advanced and upper advanced levels, including history, politics and international relations, translation, and teaching Japanese.

The appointee will contribute to the School's teaching programs in Japanese Language and in their area of specialisation at all levels (Undergraduate, Honours, MA and PhD), and will recruit and supervise Honours, MA and PhD students. An interest in learning technologies and innovative approaches to teaching is desirable. The appointee should be active in professional service within ANU, and both nationally and internationally in their relevant disciplines, as well as in the broader community.
