The Role
The Suicide Prevention Outreach clinician will provide care and follow‑up to people who have been identified as experiencing, recovering from or managing suicidal distress. The Clinician will work alongside Custodial Mental Health, Primary Health and Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW) to provide support to patients. Support includes conducting suicide risk assessments and developing safety plans, providing assertive follow‑up after a crisis, engaging with family members, and collaborative identification of patient‑centred multi‑disciplinary support. The position forms part of the Towards Zero Suicides in Custody Initiative and will trial new approaches to working with patients identified as at risk of suicide in custody.
Essential Requirements
* For nursing staff – Current authority to practice as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia. Minimum RN Year.
* For allied health – A Bachelor degree or post graduate qualification in allied health professions, including social work, occupational therapy or psychology. Must have at least two years of clinical experience working. Health applicant must have AHPRA registration (Psychologist/Occupational Therapist) or AASW membership (Social Worker).
Our Service and Team
Custodial Mental Health (CMH) is a specialist mental health service within the Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network that provides a range of mental health services to adults in NSW correctional centres. CMH includes a specialist mental health team with mental health nurses (MHNs), nurse practitioners (NPs), Aboriginal Mental Health Clinicians, psychiatrists, career medical officers (CMOs), and psychiatry registrars who are supported by administrative and managerial staff. CMH clinicians work alongside staff from other clinical streams and CSNSW staff, including Psychology, Offender Services and Programs, and Custodial Operations staff in the provision of mental health services. Mental health services begin at the point of reception and continue through to release from custody or transfer to another correctional centre.
